Reintroduced Beavers Are Bringing a Utah River Back to Life

Their dams on the Price River are helping fish, improving water health and buffering drought.

Sometimes the best engineers have flat tails. Beavers reintroduced to Utah's Price River are building dams that are helping the river recover, The Cool Down reports.

What the beavers do

  • Slow the water: dams spread water across floodplains, recharging groundwater
  • Buffer drought: ponds hold water through dry spells
  • Help fish: deeper, cooler pools give fish places to shelter and feed
  • Improve water health: slower flows let sediment settle out

Locals credit the animals with helping the whole community.

Nature-based fixes

Beaver reintroduction is part of a wider trend of letting nature do restoration work. In Indonesia, the KehatiKu project pays former poachers in nine West Kalimantan villages for photos and recordings of wildlife, turning hunters into protectors, Asharq Al-Awsat reports.
