Visitors to Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, now park under a power plant. Electrek reported on 5 October 2026 that the park's solar carport is complete, and describes it as the largest in California.

By the numbers

  • Capacity: 12.37 megawatts.
  • Panels: 22,908 bifacial panels, which also capture light reflected from below, across 36 carport structures.
  • Coverage: about 637,000 square feet of canopy, shading roughly 4,315 parking spaces.
  • Expected output: about 20.8 million kilowatt-hours a year.
  • Storage: a battery system rated at about 2 megawatts and 8 megawatt-hours.
  • EV charging: 109 charging connectors across guest and employee lots.

The goal

The system is designed to offset the annual electricity use of the park and neighboring Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles, aiming for 100% of yearly consumption. The site remains connected to Southern California Edison's grid, so the target is an annual balance rather than running solely off the sun.

Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables built the project, which broke ground on 1 November 2023. Magic Mountain follows Six Flags parks at Discovery Kingdom in Northern California and Great Adventure in New Jersey, which also host on-site solar.

Why it matters

Parking lots are existing, already-paved land. Covering them with panels adds clean power without using new open space, and gives guests shade and a place to charge their cars.

Real-world output and the 100% target will only be clear after a year or more of operation.
