"Lost" Ghana Cuckooshrike Spotted Again After 13 Years
Researchers found the rare bird in Côte d'Ivoire's Taï National Park.
A bird that had not been seen for 13 years has turned up again. Researchers spotted a Ghana cuckooshrike in June in Taï National Park in Côte d'Ivoire, Good Good Good reports.
The Ghana cuckooshrike is a forest bird of West Africa's Upper Guinean rainforest, one of the most heavily cleared forest regions on Earth. Long gaps without a confirmed sighting had raised fears it might be gone.
Why rediscoveries matter
A rediscovery confirms that a species still survives and tells conservationists where to focus protection. Taï National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects one of the largest remaining blocks of primary forest in West Africa.
Another new face
Elsewhere, researchers trapping small mammals in Sri Lanka, using bait of peanut butter and burnt coconut, turned up a mouse species new to science, Good Good Good reports.
